Bushwick: long ago defaced and degraded by "mural style" ads, Bichon Frise shit, bro vomit, and crêpe trucks, we perch on the edge of an almost-imaginary recent past, clinging to an old lease as "postmodern mediterranean" buildings march us shoulder to shoulder towards total erasure. This exhibition briefly stages the melancholy, mortification, embattlement, righteousness, humor and violence of artists who were working in performance art before it became a joke on TV, artists who use "recycled materials" because they are free, artists whose politics, identities, and "socio-ethics" are core elements of practice not marketing tools. 

REMAINING/REMINDING/REMAINS/REMAINDERS is visual works and video by artists who celebrate no "post" (gentrification)(modern)(colonial)(structural), working through ongoing colonial, imperial, and capital-driven histories, leaving remainders of performances, using remains and scraps of materials used for other purposes, providing reminders of what matters.

Insensible activity, indeterminacy, profanity, profoundly peculiar parsing, and radically alterior perspectives beg the question: what if this world exists entirely in the minds of these people? THESE PEOPLE are artists without peers, i.e. what they do is stupendously singular. Furthermore, they may or may not have their heads screwed on "correctly," but the direction they are facing is certainly worth considering, and definitely definitively delectable.

How are artists categorized via identity? How does the political operation of performance art relate with the artist's identity and how are identifications made for political and institutional reasons? What effects do identifications have on the audiences experiencing the work and on the artists themselves? Jolie Pichardo, Anna Kalwajtys and Karolina Kubik, Jon Konkol, Hoesy Corona. Each artist performs, the audience will be led from Glasshouse to Panoply Performance Laboratory, where performances will continue and a brief group talkback will occur. (image: Hoesy Corona)
